The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) had administered the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) and Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) since 1978 and 1980 respectively. The HKCEE was a well established and recognised public examination in Hong Kong for students who had completed their five years of secondary education. The HKALE was taken by students upon completion of their two-year sixth-form education. Over the years, more than 4 370 000 and 900 000 candidates took the HKCEE and HKALE respectively. The two examinations were replaced by the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination in 2012.
