Calligraphy is the art of writing. It is a form in the visual arts for the artistic expression of emotion through the use of writing tools. Though calligraphy literally means 'beautiful writing', the term in Chinese also means 'the rules of writing' because of the unique structure of Chinese writing words. Unlike the western writing words that are formed from alphabets, the Chinese writing words, known as characters, each conveys more phonetic and semantic meanings. Thus, in addition to the different writing tools between the East and the West, i.e. brush and pen, the writing skills and aesthetic systems of the eastern and western calligrapphies are also varied.
