Jazz is a music genre which was influenced by both the European harmonic structure and African rhythms and blended with many styles of music, such as blues and ragtime. Jazz is often characterized by swing rhythms and varying degrees of improvisation. The latter is typically an important part of jazz as it gives an opportunity for individual musicians to not only show off their skills, but also express themselves on their instruments at that given moment. Thus, the music is never played the exact same way twice and that is also what makes jazz stand out from other music genres. Connect to the MMIS to find out more.
